My current work explores the construction of identity through an in depth conversation with the sitter in my paintings. Using the traditional material of oil paint on canvas, portraiture is expanded into an interactive experience between the sitter and artist. This interaction results in a narrative filled with both the physical form of my subject and the stories that construct their identity.

The figure is painted from direct observation and/or photography, while placing the model within an imaginary landscape. Color and composition choices express both a reflexive and emotional response to the ephemeral connection established and the act of socialization.

My paintings explore the figure in a versatile representation of possibilities around the issues of gender, ethnicity, sexuality and identity.
